Desktop setup

Configuring your desktop to work with PrivateRelay

Our web client interface is as feature rich as any off line email client however, if required, we also offer full support for desktop programs like Outlook, Thunderbird or Pegasus mail.

Linking your desktop program to your account

The configuration is made using the protocol IMAP. In simple terms, this is the language used to talk to our servers.

Basic steps:

  1. Create a new account and choose IMAP as the type of account.
  2. Then enter your Name, Email and Password.
  3. Your device should then ask for additional information as follows:
    Server name: mail.privaterelay.com
User name: Your email, eg: johndoe@privaterelay.com
Password: Your email password on PrivateRelay
    Sending server (SMTP): mail.privaterelay.com
User name: Your email, eg: johndoe@privaterelay.com
Password: Your email password on PrivateRelay
  4. Once complete you should be linked to your account.
  5. If additional information is requested then please indicate the ports:
993 for IMAP and 465 for SMTP
  6. Ports 143 for IMAP and 587 for SMTP may also be used using ‘STARTTLS’. Be sure to use ‘SSL encryption’ on these ports to ensure your data is secure between the servers and your machine.

Setting up a desktop ‘IMAP’ account is one of the most standard methods of configuring your email. If you are having any configuration issues then please refer to the documentation of the program you are using.

If you still have problems then please submit a support request. Provide as much information as you can on the problem you have, the steps you made to setup your account, and any error messages. We will do our best to help out!
